Sugar Train has up to 25 paylines on a 5x3 reel layout. Players must match two or more paying symbols on these paylines for a win, depending on the symbol. As a medium volatility slot, you can expect variation in payout size and frequency.

Theme and Story of the Sugar Train Slot

Eyecon kept the story simple, making sure every detail stuck to the Candyland theme. This is a cheery game with a brightly-coloured, computer-generated background of rolling green hills dotted with oversized lollipops. A literal sugar train sits on a candy-striped track beneath the grid, coming into play during the Gumball Bonus.

The paying symbols are all different types of sweets, from a simple cupcake awarding up to 100x the bet per line, all the way up to the highest-paying symbol – the Sugar Train Candy. Landing five of these awards a payout of 500x your bet per line.

The payouts for the higher-paying symbols jump dramatically, making the smaller wins feel pretty lacklustre in comparison.

Graphics, Sounds and Vibes

The audiovisual aspect of the Sugar Train slot isn’t quite up to the level you’d expect from a modern online slot. First of all, the computer-generated graphics make the game feel like it’s older than it really is, although many players enjoy that retro style, and the animations still run very smoothly.

There is no soundtrack at all, which can make it hard to feel fully immersed in the game. Alongside the paying symbols, there is the Wild symbol, a gummy bear dancing in a field of lollipops. As you would expect from a Wild, when this symbol lands, it substitutes for any paying symbol to complete more winning combinations.

Gumball Bonus

The Gumball Bonus is where the Sugar Train comes into play. In the top right corner of the grid, there is a red and yellow traffic light on top of a green and white striped ‘wigwag’.

The Gumball Bonus is triggered when the red line reaches the top of this pole after a dead spin. A new train appears beneath the grid and claws retrieve five gumballs from the carriages.

Each Gumball contains a different prize of up to 100x your total wager, meaning a potential maximum win of up to 500x your stake. However, you only win the prize if the claw doesn’t drop the gumball. This bonus feature isn’t available in the free spins round.

Testing the Sugar Train Slot with a £50 Bankroll

To be able to give a comprehensive review of what to expect when playing the Sugar Train slot, I tested the game out on a £50 budget, with a stake of £1 per spin across 50 spins.

I landed my first win of £0.48 on my third spin thanks to a well-placed Wild, and then another win of £1.68 on my fifth spin from a Gummy Bear and Wild symbol. In fact, across my 50 spins, most of my wins were thanks to the Wild symbol completing matching combinations, especially for the symbols that only require two matches on a payline.

On spin 22, I managed to land four Sugar Train Candy symbols that spanned over multiple paylines, leading to a payout of £6.76 and taking my total back up to £42.60. Although I had a few more wins larger than my stake during the second half of my session, none were big enough to bring my total back up and I wasn’t lucky enough to land any of the bonus features. I ended the session with a balance of £24.60, so overall I lost £25.40.
