Rainbow Riches Slot Review

Barcrest released Rainbow Riches in 2006. The Irish-themed online slot has 5 reels and 3 rows. I uncovered 20 paylines, three bonus features, and a nostalgic design in my Rainbow Riches playthrough.

Multiple spin-offs have followed, but I will focus on the original game today, which offers a 95% RTP and 500x maximum win.

Rainbow Riches Gameplay

I immediately noticed the similarities between Rainbow Riches and traditional slot machines. The game is set on a 5x3 grid, and the number of paylines can be adjusted from 1 to 20. The stake is able to be set from £0.20 to £5 per spin, which is a limited range if you are a high roller.

My Rainbow Riches review found that the wild symbol is a gold coin and can substitute for other symbols to help form other winning combinations. The road to riches, wishing well, and pots of gold symbols can’t be replaced by the wild. Payouts occur on adjacent reels from left to right.

I found that traditional royal symbols are the lowest-paying, while the wishing well and Rainbow Riches logo are the most lucrative. I launched the Rainbow Reels demo and spun the reels with a £1 stake. My first win came on my fifth spin and was worth £3.

Theme and Story of the Rainbow Riches Slot

Rainbow Riches has an Irish theme, which has long been one of my favourites. It didn’t take long for me to notice the Celtic elements in this slot. Set in the Irish countryside with its rolling hills and lush grass, the game follows the adventures of the leprechaun main character. While the theme is nothing new, I do like how Barcrest has maintained the sense of fun and not listened to outside noise regarding its simplicity.

Graphics, Sounds, and Vibes

Rainbow Riches is certainly not the most eye-catching slot I have played. However, there is something about the 2D graphics, traditional symbols, and retro feel that enticed me. There are no fancy animations or visuals, which is in keeping with the light-hearted theme.

The vibrant palette looks good on screen, with the reels set on a backdrop of a picturesque skyline. The attention to detail is impressive, with mushrooms and flowers dotted across the terrain. It would have been nice to find some symbol animations, particularly following a win.

However, lines do appear on the reels, which quickly made it clear where winning combinations had formed. I hate to moan, but I would like to see the payout amount displayed using larger text, as it is quite difficult to read in its current format.

Everything about the sound effects is in line with Rainbow Riches’ basic style. While I heard sounds after wins and when the wild symbol landed, they were dated, and I eventually turned them off. After the intro music ended, I was disappointed not to hear an ongoing soundtrack.

Rainbow Riches Slot on Mobile

Rainbow Riches’ basic graphics mean that you don’t have to worry about a limited visual experience on mobile. However, I would suggest playing in landscape mode, as I couldn’t even see the famous rainbow in portrait view. In this view, the grid only takes up the top half of the screen, while the spin and autoplay buttons are found underneath.

It is tricky to view your balance and bet size. This is because the light blue text doesn’t show very well on a dark purple background. While I was critical of the sound effects when I played the Rainbow Riches free demo on PC, they are more effective with headphones on.

Wishing Wells Bonus

I was given the opportunity to pick one of three wishing wells when three wishing well symbols landed anywhere on the reels. The multiplier reward ranges from 2x to 500x your bet. The latter is the Rainbow Riches maximum win.

3+ leprechaun scatters landing on the reels triggered the Road to Riches bonus when I played the Rainbow Riches demo. A prize wheel appeared on screen with seven segments: 1 to 6 and Collect. The prize you receive is determined by the position on the path you reached. For example, I finished at x20, meaning that my stake was multiplied by 20. 500x is the highest position on the ladder.

Pots of Gold

Land the Pots of Gold symbol on reels 2, 3, and 4 to activate this bonus game. The bronze, silver, and gold pots that appear on screen feature a different multiplier. The most generous is again 500x your bet. This is the quickest route to the maximum payout.

RTP and Volatility

The 95% RTP is below average for online slot machines and is not one of Rainbow Riches’ selling points. It means you can expect to earn, on average, £95 for every £100 staked. However, the medium Rainbow Riches volatility delivers a good mix between the size and frequency of payouts.
