Money Train Slot Review

Money Train is a five-reel slot from Relax Gaming that is set in the Wild West. With 40 paylines, a 96.20% RTP, and a 20.000x top win, my Money Train review found expanding reels, special symbols, and a generous bonus game. 

The Money Cart bonus is one of the most enjoyable bonus features I have come across. Offering free spins and multipliers, I was struck by the attention to detail of this 2022-released game. This is the original in what is arguably the most popular slot series from Relax Gaming. I have also enjoyed Money Train 2 and Money Train 4 during my time.

Money Train Gameplay

I was left a little bored at times during the base game. Most of the excitement surrounds the bonus game, which I triggered when 3+ scatters landed anywhere on the reels. Three or more matching symbols are required to earn a payout. 

However, I should make players aware that the first symbol must land on reel 1 and the rest on subsequent reels. The wild symbol is represented by a pair of shotguns, and I could use it to substitute any other symbol besides the scatter. I was pleased to discover that all symbols can be stacked during the base game. 

Traditional Diamonds, Clubs, Hearts, and Spades are the low-paying symbols. I activated higher wins when I landed one of the four main characters. For example, I won 10x my bet when three outlaw symbols landed. My payout increased to 75x for five of the white-haired outlaws. I was able to bet from £0.10 to £50 per spin, limits that will suit many UK players.

Theme and Story of the Money Train Slot

Upon launching the Money Train free demo, I joined a motley crew of bandits as they attempted to board a fast-moving train and complete a daring heist. A fearsome leader, a debt collector, a TNT expert, and a gunslinger feature. I would summarise the slot’s theme as Wild West, although I have seen others focus more on the heist element. So, if you fancy yourself as something of a Billy the Kid or Calamity Jane, this could well be the game for you. 

Graphics, Sounds, and Vibes

The train quickly came to a halt when I loaded the Money Train demo. This gave me an opportunity to appreciate the attention to detail that Relax Gaming has put into the graphics of this slot machine. Everything from the dust of the railway station to the swinging signal helped to enhance my visual experience. 

I should also mention that the first two train carriages promote two of Relax Gaming’s most popular slots, Zombie Circus and Temple Tumble Megaways. The reels of Money Train are revealed as the carriage shutter opens. It is almost impossible not to notice the spinning windmill in the background. I was able to quickly locate the spin and bonus buy buttons. 

Like the gameplay, I found the spaghetti western soundtrack somewhat dull during the base game. However, it gathers pace and adds to the sense of anticipation when Money Train bonus features trigger. I did enjoy hearing the gunshot sound effect when a winning combo formed and wild symbols landed.

I played the slot using my smartphone and tablet as part of completing my Money Train review. While I had no issues with performance, the finer details were harder to spot on mobile. This is to be expected on the iPhone's smaller screen. I did see a noticeable improvement when using an iPad. 

The process of setting my stake and spinning the reels was made simple thanks to conveniently placed buttons at the bottom of the screen. The layout only differs slightly between portrait and landscape. I would suggest using landscape mode whenever possible, as it makes it easier to see which symbols land on the reels.

Money Train Slot Bonus Features

Much of the positive feedback I have read about this slot machine revolves around the Money Train bonus features. I uncovered just one bonus game, known as Money Cart. 3+ scatters landing on reels 1, 3, and 5 are required to trigger it. 

The Money Cart

I was immediately transported to a new cart and greeted by three free spins upon activating this feature. 20 symbol slots then appear on screen. The spin count resets every time a new symbol lands in one of the positions. This continues until no new symbols appear. Each possible symbol has a different power, which I have outlined below.

Bonus - I just saw a value as a multiplication of my bet. 

Persistent Collector - The total value of the reels is collected and added at the end of that spin and following spins. 

Persistent Payer - The multiplication of my bet was added to all on-screen symbols, as well as those that followed.

Payer - The multiplier shown is added to all other symbols on the reels. 

Collector - All displayed values are collected and added to the total value. 

Widener - An additional reel opens, and the multiplier value is displayed. 

If I have not made it clear already, the Money Train bonus feature plays a key role in this slot. This is why I suggest utilising the bonus buy feature where possible. However, it does require an investment of 80x your bet. The Money Train RTP increases to 98% during this round. 

Money Train Slot Wagering Details

This section offers more details on the Money Train’s RTP, volatility, bet limits, and bonus frequency. 

RTP and Volatility

The RTP is fixed at 96.20%. The only time this deviates is during the bonus round. You will, on average, take home £96.20 for every £100 you stake. The high volatility was clear from the outset, as I often went long periods without making any money. The hit frequency is around 18% which means you should win about every five spins. 

Bet Sizes & Variance

I feel that the £0.10 minimum bet makes Money Train a good option for players with a smaller budget. While the £50 maximum stake sounds high, I have played online slots that accept up to £240 per spin. 

Bonus Frequency

I can confidently say that the Money Train bonus game is difficult to trigger. During testing, I only activated it once from 200 spins. However, the nine free spins I claimed did boost my chances of winning. 

Testing the Money Train Slot with a £50 Bankroll

My time playing Money Train began with a £50 bankroll. Setting my stake to £1, my first six spins went by without success. I then earned small payouts of £1.40 and £8.12 from my next 10 bets. Some time passed before I claimed my biggest win of £94.40. I failed to trigger the bonus feature during this session.
