Better Gambling Forum announces global responsible gambling policies
The Better Gambling Forum has announced new global gambling policies. What are their priorities, and could this affect the way you gamble?
The Better Gambling Forum, operating under the Brain Capital Alliance, has announced a new initiative called the Responsible Gambling Practice and Policy Pillars (RG3P) Framework. This new scheme results from a partnership among the G7/G20, the United Nations and the World Economic Forum.
The Better Gambling Forum claims that they were established as a response to the “signals from across the global policy, brain health, mental health, and public health communities”.
What is RG3P?
The initiative originally emerged in the US, but global connections suggest it will soon appear in other countries. Calls for international agreement on gambling laws have been made before, but nothing as extreme as this.
Their main goal is to create a “platform for coordinated, evidence-based global responses that place brain health and human flourishing at the center”.
Instead of creating a whole new system, they want to elevate current policies and streamline them globally. To achieve this, they have reached an agreement with the UN, G7, G20 and the World Economic Forum to create the Better Gambling Forum Framework.
Six core pillars
This policy has been split into six different policy ‘pillars’, all with their own goals:
Education, informed choice & harm prevention: To reduce risk through education
Risk detection & intervention: identify and assist individuals who are showing risky gambling behaviour
Support, treatment & recovery: Provide support and treatment
Gambling environment, product & marketing: Reducing risk through product design and marketing
Ethical industry practices & accountability: Establish standards for operator behaviour
Research, evaluation & sustainable funding: Provide ongoing research and evidence-based practices.
These policies can be used by policymakers, regulators and health professionals to strengthen the existing player protection initiatives.
Global challenge
Announcing this RG3P Framework acknowledges that gambling-related harm isn’t something specific to just one country.
All increases in gambling have been put down to its growing presence in online spaces, which can target vulnerable and young people.
The company hopes that these pillars will provide;
“A practical roadmap for jurisdictions seeking to build effective gambling policy infrastructure”.
The initiative will be supported by an independent scientific oversight committee to ensure ethical standards are met, but its website claims to prioritise public well-being.
This policy could future-proof gambling regulation and health policies to keep the public’s interest at the centre. They want to widen the scope of responsible gambling to include the impact on health, rather than just industry compliance.
What this means for players
New policies would make it easier to regulate online casinos, limiting operators’ ability to base themselves in countries with the most lenient laws. Governments could see shifts in gambling tax revenues as rules become more consistent.
For players, the biggest changes would be stricter but standardised regulations. Bonuses and deposit limits may be reduced, while support tools such as self-exclusion, deposit caps, and reality checks would be expanded.
A stronger focus on player well-being means fewer gambling ads and more accessible support channels. Players would need to actively seek out new casinos, rather than being constantly targeted with promotions.
Overall, the reforms are expected to impact operators more than players, creating a safer, more responsible online gambling environment worldwide.
