Solar Queen was released by Playson in 2019. The Ancient Egyptian-themed slot features five reels and 20 paylines. My Solar Queen review found a 2,668x maximum win, a free spins bonus, and medium-high volatility.

It is one of the most popular slots from Playson, along with Bozo Cats and Wolf Power Megaways. The developer is based in Malta, but received a license from the UK Gambling Commission in 2015, meaning that it can legally partner with UK online casinos.

Solar Queen Gameplay

Solar Queen is played on a 5x4 grid and features 20 fixed paylines. Once I started playing, I quickly noticed that sun symbols drop from the top of the grid and form a burning frame. The flaming frame feature is active throughout the base game and works in 10-spin cycles.

All frames remain in place until the end of the cycle and transform into wilds on the 10th spin. Wilds can substitute for any other symbol to help form a winning combination. The feature resets at this point. This meant that payouts of 20x to 50x my bet were not uncommon when I played the Solar Queen demo.

Sun symbols can also increase winnings during the base game. This is because of the progressive winnings multiplier. My multiplier increased every time the sun landed in an existing flaming frame. The spin multiplier is saved and applied to all wins during the free spins round. I realised that I only earned payouts when winning combinations landed on a payline from left to right.

I was able to set my stake from £0.20 to £5 per spin. The Bennu bird is the scatter, and three landing on the reels will trigger the free spins bonus.

Traditional royals act as the low-paying symbols. I won higher payouts when I landed winning combinations of pelicans, birds, cats, lions, Anubis, Horus, and the Solar Queen herself. For example, my first payout through the Solar Queen free demo was £1.25 when 3x pelicans landed on a payline.

Theme and Story of the Solar Queen Slot

Solar Queen follows a Cleopatra-inspired heroine through a landscape of mythical sands and ancient ruins. While the Egyptian theme is a classic choice, Playson sets this title apart by swapping the typical desert sun for a striking, starry night sky.

Graphics, Sounds, and Vibes

Solar Queen’s design doesn’t stand out as there is little going on behind the reels. The reels are set next to the River Nile and feature skylit pyramids. Symbols fall nicely from the top of the grid, but I was left disappointed by the lack of animation on the symbols. Sun and scatter symbols are the only exceptions.

Win amounts are clearly displayed in the centre of the grid, and a cosmic line shows where the win came from. I liked how I could easily track my progress towards the 10th spin on the metre at the top of the page. The background turns a mix of orange and purple at this point.

The soundtrack is mysterious and traditional to Egypt. This added to my experience and feels like it would still be heard in the streets of Cairo today. Additional sound effects are heard after wins, a bonus is triggered, and after the 10th spin.

Solar Queen Slot on Mobile

As with all my reviews, I tested the Solar Queen demo on mobile devices. I didn’t enjoy the same visual experience when using my iPhone in portrait mode. The Nile is barely visible and you get no real sense of the setting. It was slightly better in landscape mode, where you can see the pyramids in the background and the steps leading into the water. I could easily read my balance and bet size without having to move closer to the screen. The spin button moves from the centre to the right of the screen when using portrait and landscape views.

Sun symbols that land during this round will instantly turn wild. They stick to their cell and remain active until the round ends. Winnings multipliers that helped trigger the bonus were applied to any winnings I made.

I couldn’t find an official word on the volatility from the provider, but most experts put it in the medium-high category. This means that payouts are generally less frequent but higher.
