Overview of Gambling in Washington

The popularity of online gambling in the US is revving up. And thanks to legislative changes, each state now has the power to offer online sports betting and casino gambling. Many states have already joined the booming industry, whilst others are left in the cold with outdated opinions towards online gambling.

If you are passing through Washington State or are a resident, it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with what you are permitted to do when it comes to online gambling. In this guide, you’ll find all you need to know to keep you on the right side of the law.

Guide to gamble in the state of Washington

Is Online Gambling Legal in Washington State?

Washington State is very much against online gambling, whether it's done on a casino or sports betting site. The state remains adamant about this and has strict laws in place with heavy jail-term punishments for those who go against the regulations. Whilst some states turn a blind eye, gambling online in Washington will score you a class C felony.

It doesn’t seem likely that this will change anytime soon either. The state focuses its gambling attention on the 27 tribal operated casinos which are dotted throughout Washington. These casinos also offer the state lottery and some off-track betting. Retail sports betting was launched in 2021 and is only available in a handful of casinos.

Whilst social casinos are legal in much of the US, Washington is one of two states which prohibits them. With lawmakers viewing virtual sweeps as a thing of value linked to real money.

Minimum Legal age to Gamble in Washington State

All forms of gambling in Washington State can be done by those aged 18 and upwards. When compared with other states, this is pretty low - especially for casino gambling. Some of the tribal establishments require players to be 21 though, due to alcohol being served on the premises.

Who Regulates Casinos in Washington?

The Washington State Gambling Commission regulates all forms of gambling. Whether it's the state lottery (Washington never joined the Multi-State Lottery Association) or charitable bingo games. Find below some news about online gambling in the United States.
