In 2012, Delaware became the first state to legalize online gambling within its borders. Ever since other states across America have been keeping a close eye on how the change in the jurisdiction will manifest as time goes by.

Since then, it’s been a slow but steady improvement towards the acceptance of online gambling, with Nevada, New Jersey and Pennsylvania quickly following suit.

The online casino scene has been turbulent in America these past couple of months, with huge debates regarding a fully regulated betting market and its effects on the economy and any social implications it might have on the residents.

Maine is known to have lax laws regarding gambling, and rules tend to be passed quickly, which gives the casino enthusiasts hope that a change might be in the pipeline.

Guide to gamble in the state of Maine

Is Online Gambling Legal in Maine?

Currently, you can enjoy online Daily Fantasy Sports or social/sweepstake casinos in the state. Whilst the Maine Code does not criminalise playing unlicensed games of chance, we wouldn't recommend it. It is looking very likely that sports betting will soon be legalised as bills are moving forwards with votes still pending.

These bills relate to retail sports betting though which would only be offered in the land-based casinos in Maine.

Maine has a thriving horse racing industry where bets can be placed online at a number of licensed outlets. Whilst betting on dog racing was prohibited in 1993. There are a small number of commercially owned casinos, though these were only made legal in 2003.

High stakes bingo and charitable bingo is permitted through one tribal-owned bingo hall. Residents can also partake in the Maine lottery and multi-state lottos.

Minimum Legal age to Gamble in Maine

Maine has one of the lowest minimum ages in the US when it comes to gambling which is set to age 16 for the state lottery. 18-year-olds can partake in horse race betting, though 21 is the minimum age to play at a casino. DFS and bingo each carry minimum ages of 18.
