Finding the Best Online Casino in Croatia

Pin-pointing the best online casino Croatia residents can play at is no easy task due to the vast number of them out there and the fact that they all offer a slightly different experience in various ways.

However, you're in the right place! Let us put you at ease by giving you tips and advice on looking for an excellent online casino that serves Croatian players. Here we'll guide you through three key areas that a fantastic online casino will nail, making it a perfect choice.

First, we'll look at bonuses offered by these casinos before addressing options for mobile gameplay; then, we'll talk a bit about safety and security when playing at a Croatian online casino.

Bonuses Tailored for Croatian Players

Online casinos usually offer new players a welcome bonus or welcome package that gives you extra funds to play with, allowing you to explore more of the games on offer at the site in question. What's particularly great about the best Croatian online casinos is that a welcome bonus is offered in your currency of HRK! Yes, you can deposit and often even play in Kuna!

In addition, online casinos like to keep you coming back for more and, as such, tend to have a range of ongoing promotions that you can take advantage of. These often include regular weekly or monthly bonuses, most of which will be available to claim in your preferred currency.

But there are more than just bonuses tailored to your preference at these online casinos. You'll quite often find opportunities to get free spins too. These can come in the form of a welcome offer, where depositing for the first-time results in the awarding of free spins on a specific game, or they can be offered as an ongoing or loyalty perk.

Great Mobile Casino Options

One of the most attractive points of an online casino is playing games on your smartphone or tablet. With almost everyone owning a smartphone or tablet - or both! - online casinos and game developers have worked hard to stay current, creating mobile-friendly casino options for today's tech-savvy casino gamer.

An excellent online casino will allow you to play all of their games collection on any device. This can be achieved in several ways.

Firstly, and perhaps most commonly, online casinos quite often feature a responsive design for their website. What does that mean? It means that you can visit the website on any device, from your home computer to your laptop to your mobile phone and tablet, and the website will adjust to give you the best possible experience based on the device you're using. Website navigation and gameplay is equally quick and accessible no matter what device you use.

Another option, though slightly less common, is a downloadable app that you can install on your iOS or Android devices. Some people prefer to have a separate app rather than accessing the online casino via their web browser. Whichever option you select, look out for it when choosing an online casino so you can get the mobile gaming experience you want.

Safe Gaming Environment

Safety is a crucial aspect of playing online casino games, and as such, it should rank highly when it comes to deciding where to play. But how can you determine if an online casino is safe and secure? Let's take a look at a few promising signs of a secure online casino.

  • Casino Licensing: check that an online gambling authority correctly licenses the site you're considering. Online casinos that are appropriately licensed must follow strict regulatory requirements regarding how members are treated and the games that are provided. Some of the most stringent gaming regulators include the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) and the United Kingdom Gambling Commission (UKGC).
  • Encryption: secure casinos will prioritise the protection of data, most especially considering the sensitive information a player would need to send over to the casino. Therefore, online casinos should employ high-security features and have the site encrypted to prevent players' data from falling into the wrong hands.
  • Know Your Client (KYC): players wishing to withdraw money from their casino account will be asked to provide documents as part of the KYC processes. Such documents may include proof of residence and a statement of wealth.
  • Reputable game providers: a casino with many games is something that every player wants; however, we should always look at the quality of games. Reputable software providers such as Pragmatic Play, Net Ent, and Play'n Go all provide high-quality, thoroughly tested games. To ensure fairness, casinos employ a random number generator so that everything is wholly randomised; third party checks are also done to ensure players are in a completely safe environment.

Payment Methods in Online Casinos in Croatia

Being able to deposit is one of the most fundamental aspects of playing at an online casino. After all, if you can't deposit, you can't play for real, which means you can't win for real! It's therefore super important to make sure that any online casino you consider joining accepts the payment methods you plan to use.

While it's true that Croatian Kuna is not a widely used currency, that doesn't mean you can't deposit and play with it at online casinos. Those dedicated to serving the Croatian market will offer not only the ability to deposit in HRK, but also play in Kuna too - and that gives you a whole lot less to worry about!

Payment methods that allow you to deposit in Kuna include credit and debit cards like Visa, Mastercard and Maestro. But these aren't your only options. The widely accepted online payment services of PayPal, Skrill, Neteller and Paysafecard can also be used to make your Kuna deposits. Gambling Options in Croatia

The nature of the gambling industry in various parts of the world can look very different, and it can be not very clear when it comes to trying to figure out what you can do in which country.

It's human nature to take our home country's rules and regulations for granted and assume that things are the same or very similar in other parts of the world, but this is where players can land themselves in deep water!

On one end of the scale, you've got some countries that allow all types of gambling, both online and offline, while on the other, there are countries that do not allow gambling in any form. So whereabouts on that scale do Croatia sit

This is just one of the things we'll talk about in this section before covering the age restrictions for gamblers in Croatia and how popular online gaming is in the country.

Is gambling legal in croatia

Legal Status of Croatian Casinos

Casino gambling is perfectly legal in Croatia! Following the 2014 gambling law, 'Zakon o grama na sreću' just one form of gambling that is legal in Croatia which is broken down into four categories of lottery games, games of chance with an instant win (e.g. scratch cards), sports betting, and slot machines (including video poker).

Casinos wishing to offer these services must hold a valid licence issued from the Ministry of Finance in the country.

However, that's just the situation for land-based operations. Online casino gaming has been legal in Croatia since 2010 but was a little unclear. The 2014 legislation clarified the position somewhat and introduced some regulations that were not too popular amongst operators.

Following similar rules in certain US states, the first condition of being licensed to operate an online casino in Croatia is the operator must also have a land-based operation in the country, which was seen as somewhat prejudiced against offshore online casinos. However, this does not mean there aren't offshore online casinos that don't accept players from Croatia!

Operators must also have an online gambling licence issued by the Ministry of Finance, which comes with the unusually steep fee of 3,000,000 HRK per year and the requirement that at least 3,000,000 HRK must be kept in reserve at all times to cover players' winnings.

There are also taxes that operators must pay, with those on slots some of the highest in the industry at 25%. Players are also responsible for paying tax on their winnings, ranging from 10% to 30% based on how much was won.

Minimum Age to Gamble

All forms of gambling in Croatia are permitted by people age 18 and over. This covers everything from playing the national lottery to betting on sports, playing in land-based casinos, to getting your casino gaming online.

Gambling authority licence holders are required by law to ensure that they advertise the legal age limits on their site, but their responsibilities also extend beyond that. KYC, or Know Your Customer checks, are also required by law to ensure that players are who they say they are

This means you'll be asked to provide documentary evidence, such as a passport or ID card, to prove your age, amongst other things.

Online casinos also implement other methods of ensuring that underage gamblers do not have access to their site, such as requiring a date of birth on sign-up, offering secure login, and encouraging members to protect their children and prevent them from seeing their online gaming activities and accessing their account.

The popularity of Online Gambling

As in many parts of the world, online gambling had become rather popular in Croatia, probably helped when Croatia became a member of the EU, which resulted in more interest in the region from online gambling operators.

Even though Croatia currently only issues online gambling licences to operators of land-based casinos in the region, there are still many online casinos that accept players from Croatia

This highlights a grey area in which licensed online casinos operating outside of Croatia can still legally accept players from the country due to their regulatory base being within the EU, of which Croatia is a member country.

The increasing ease with which Croatians can access and play online casino games has, of course, resulted in increased popularity of these games, with more people exploring the wide range of slots, classic table games and realistic live dealer games the industry has to offer.

With the country traditionally running something of a monopoly on games such as lottery and bingo, it's hardly surprising that the opportunity to explore a whole world of other games has proven so popular!

History of Gambling in Croatia

Unlike many other countries with a long history, Croatia is relatively new, having split from Yugoslavia to become an independent country in 1991. This means they've had far less time determining rules and regulations when it comes to gambling than other countries.

Later, Croatia was one of the first countries in the region to legally allow and regulate gambling, which happened back in the 1960s. When Croatia became independent, the gambling industry in the newly emerged country took off, especially after the law of 2010 made it legal, with resort-style casinos attracting a lot of tourism.

However, the first form of gambling to get the green light in the country was sports betting. Private operators Sport Tip and Prva Sportska Kladionica were the first to set up shop and are now the leading bookmakers in Croatia.

Online casino gambling offered in Croatia came relatively recently in the lottery, sports betting, keno and bingo from the state-run Hrvatska Lutrija and Prva Sportska Kladionica

In 2014, new legislation meant that private operators could apply for an online gambling licence from the Ministry of Finance. Still, it came at a price, too much protest within the industry, particularly from offshore online casinos, which resented a land-based casino's high fees and requirement in the country.

This did little to stop offshore online casinos from accepting players from Croatia, allowed by a loophole in European regulatory conditions. Though Croatia has done little to prevent this activity, with sites currently unblocked, Hrvatska Lutrija did partner with Microgaming and Intralot Interactive to increase their range of gaming opportunities.
