Gambling in Europe

Many major operators from within Europe were turning their attention to the burgeoning U.S. sports betting market in the early months of 2020. And then the pandemic hit resulting in many sporting events being affected by it. That didn’t stop those companies from continuing to focus on their American futures, though.

Of course, 2020 was much more notable for Europe’s collective interest in wanting to tidy up the gambling industry. ‘Consumer protection’, while not specifically a new entity, became much more of a focus for European countries with regulated gambling.

However, it turned out that operators of gambling services ended up claiming that they needed protection from the wave of restrictions being pushed upon them by governments and regulators alike.

The United Kingdom finished 2020 with the news of the government announcing their long-awaited review of the Gambling Act 2005. This came followed multiple consultations between the Gambling Commission and various ‘working groups’ surrounding game design, bonus offers, advertising and VIP programs.

Meanwhile, Sweden entered into its second year of online gambling regulation, bringing more licensed and regulated European online casinos to its residents. However, friction grew between the country’s operators and regulator, Spelinspektionen. This came in part due to unclear guidelines surrounding bonuses and unacceptable sports betting markets. New online casino deposit limits were also introduced, with the government claiming it was a “pandemic precaution”.

In Spain, licensed operators spent the majority of 2020 trying to dissuade the government from imposing harsh marketing limitations, such as restricting advertising to a four-hour window from 1 am. The government finished 2020 by opening a consultation on some potential new responsible gambling rules.

And Germany finally unveiled plans for a new regulated online gambling market. That was quite the joy for operators…until the fine print was discovered.

Those guidelines included a last-minute addition of taxing online slot turnover at 8%. However, German online casino operators proceeded to fill out new licence applications, even after German payment processor Wirecard imploded when it was caught hiding billions in losses.

Gambling in the Americas

The COVID-19 pandemic had quite the impact on various plans throughout the United States. Retail operators were the first to suffer from this when casinos, racetracks and even some lottery retailers were forced to shut down for months.

Some remain shut to this day still, with no clear future opening date known. Once the others were allowed to open, they had to greatly reduce the number of visitors and install a massive number of add-ons, like plexiglass dividers and so on.

This led to some operators choosing to reduce employee capacity to generate revenue. While some people were outrightly let go, others were placed on furlough. It even resulted in some big names like the Las Vegas Sands confirming rumours that it was exploring the option of selling its Nevada-based properties.

While Atlantic City, New Jersey was not immune to those issues either, it did result in the state’s online sector receiving a boost. While other states may have regretted not introducing a legal online casino or poker option for their residents, numerous New Jersey online casinos flourished. As a result, the sector is on course to almost hit the $1 billion mark, doubling its previous year’s result.

Pennsylvania’s own online casino market has yet to reach the lofty heights of that being experienced in NJ. Yet, the practically insane 56% online slots tax rate has likely ensured that the state was able to continue earning money, even as land-based establishments entered into a second lockdown in December.

And those states with online lottery options were likely grateful when residents choose to turn to the internet for their purchases. The likelihood is that other U.S. locations have taken notice of the influx of online gambling fans and maybe viewing the sector in a much more favourable light now.

Last, of all, the biggest impact probably came for Canadian sports betting fans. The Liberal government noted their support for the amendment of the country’s Criminal Code, ending the ban on single-event wagering. Rather than pushing for a vote prior to the holiday season though, the Liberals held back.

It is expected for the measure to resurface in 2021, and hopes are high for it to pass through. In the meantime, find out the top Canadian casino sites we found.
