Surprising Battle of Malta winner couldn’t afford breakfast before his big win

Battle of Malta's big winner If you love a good underdog story, you're going to be hooked on this exciting big winner tale from the recent 2017 Battle of Malta event.

After attracting more than 2000 entrants, the competition was stiff during this event that is considered to be the Global Poker Index front runner. Featuring players from around the world, this exciting poker event has just completed its 6th season in a row.

Organised by PokerListing, Battle of Malta is a €550 buy-in event and attracts players looking to conquer No-Limit Hold'em and take home the grand prize.

Big Winner Surprise

One of the most surprising entrants into the 2017 event was Nadav Lipszyc. While you may be wondering what makes this player so surprising, the fact that he took home the ultimate title and won the largest Battle of Malta prize ever is just the tip of the iceberg.

A farm manager from Israel, Lipszyc was one of four players from Israel seated at the final table.

More than that, he arrived at the tournament with barely any cash to his name. In fact, he didn't even have enough to buy himself a hearty breakfast before his big win!

“I came here with no money in my pocket. I barely had money for breakfast,” said Lipszyc.

The BOM was the lucky big winner's second live tournament ever and the first was a satellite game that earned him his seat at Battle of Malta. Lipszyc knew he was out of his depth, but he didn't let it throw him off of his game.

“99% of players in this field had more experience than me,” he said. “I think Daniel Negreanu entered my body and played for me.”

Compared to past winners, Lipszyc's win truly is the largest. In 2012, the first BOM winner, Nicodemo Piccolo took home only €35,000. Each year the final sum has increased with Antoan Katsarov breaking the 100k mark in 2014. The winner took home €122,750 that year.

Not much compares to Lipszyc claiming the massive €200,000 win, but it makes for an exciting possibility of what next year's BOM grand prize will hold!

Final Table Results

As one of the largest Battle of Malta events ever, Lipszyc's big win was an impressive one. Another first was the fact that the farmer was one of four players from Israel at the final table. This was the first time four players from a single country had made it to the end of a Battle of Malta tournament.

Take a look at the final amounts won by each of the players at the of the BOM tournament.
