News Winter Olympics BettingThe 2018 Winter Olympics have kicked off with a bang and a splendid opening ceremony on the 9th of February.

With over 100 events in 15 different disciplines there are plenty of betting opportunities that await sports enthusiast and eager bettors in the online casino industry.

The venue

The games are taking place in PyeongChang, who won the bid to host back in July 2011 after receiving 63 votes in just one round. It’s the first time that South Korea is hosting the Winter Olympics as they’ve only previously hosted the Summer Olympics once in 1988.

The events will take place across two main venues namely Alpensia Sports Park and Gangneung Olympic Park from now until the 25th of February 2018. The venues are made up of 13 separate competition venues out of which 6 were specially built for the Winter Olympics.

Why the Winter Olympics are unique

There are quite a number of reasons why this year’s Winter Olympics is receiving a lot of attention. One of the biggest reasons remain that South and North Korea were represented under the Korean Unification Flag during the opening ceremony. It was also big news that the North Korean athletes were allowed to cross the Korean Demilitarised Zone to compete. While the two countries will compete separately in the majority of disciplines, they will compete as Unified Korea in the Ice Hockey women’s category.

Then there are also 4 new events taking place this year as well as 6 nations appearing at the Winter Olympics for the very first time. These nations include Ecuador, Malaysia, Nigeria, Singapore, Kosovo and Eritrea.

There’s also been a big change which Ice Hockey bettors should take note of. The 2018 Winter Olympics mark the first time since 1994 that NHL players will not take part in the Ice Hockey event. The main reason for this change is that the NHL believes there is no positive impact on the business or sport and has decided to withdraw because of this.

Place your bets during the Winter Olympics

One of the most exiting factors of this year’s Winter Olympics is that it’s the first time ever there will be over 100 medal events taking place.

In total there are 102 events featured in this year’s event of which 4 are brand new. The newcomer events include big air snowboarding, mixed doubles curling, mixed team alpine skiing and mass start speed staking.

The sports are split into 15 disciplines namely Alpine skiing, Biathlon, Bobsleigh, Cross-country skiing, Curling, Figure Skating, Freestyle Skiing, Ice Hockey, Luge, Nordic Combined, Short track speed skating, Skeleton, Ski jumping, Snowboarding and Speed skating.

Each discipline holds a number of events of which speed skating has the highest number of events totalling in 14 and Skeleton and Ice Hockey has the least totalling in 2 events per discipline. When it comes to betting the most popular events include Biathlon, Speed Skating, Ski Jumping and Curling.
