Casino industry in JapanA new law that came into effect at the end of 2016 promises to make huge changes in the gambling industry in Japan.

The new law that legalised casino gambling services in the country officially took effect on the 26th of December 2017 after a long wait. However, while these laws are active, construction of casino venues cannot yet begin.

“In order for casino venues to be built, an implementation
bill will need to be passed.”

It is expected for this bill to take at least one year to pass and for the first casino in Japan to be completed in 2021.

New casino bill

The current bill has been described as the “promotion bill” and it does little else but legalise casino gambling in the country. It’s due to this bill’s limitations that the implementation bill need to be passed. The implementation bill will also deal with important issues such as the number of casinos that will be allowed in the country, their locations, and how they will operate.

It has been suggested that the market would start in main locations such as Tokyo, Osaka, and Yokohama. It has not yet been decided where exactly these first casinos will take root.

Support for new legislation

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the Liberal Democratic Party have always supported legalised gambling, but it seems the people may not agree. In a recent poll, the people of Japan have shown that they have many concerns including the increase of gambling addiction and lack of safeguards.

Legislators are looking into the fears and concerns of the people and will be implementing laws that will protect customers and promote responsible gambling, but still move towards turning Japan into a gambling powerhouse.
