Big Changes to Sweden's Online Gambling Regulations Could Take Place in 2019
The online casino market is one that fluctuates, changes, and evolves on a day to day basis.
As the industry adjusts to suit new regulations and player needs, markets in different regions can experience a significant change from time to time.
One such region that could be experience big changes in the near future is Sweden. As a popular online casino destination, the new jurisdictions could be a huge shake up of the current market.
Interesting Changes in 2019?
After a probe into the Swedish gambling industry as it stands today, which has been running for more than a year and a half, interesting changes are being proposed.
The proposed changes would affect the online casino industry, land-based casinos, lottery, and betting services too. It would also affect casinos that operate in cruise ships.
The probe was commissioned by the Swedish government and Lotteriinspektionen Director General Håkan Hallstedt led the review. One of the main recommendations found during the probe is that Sweden should scrap the current monopoly that Svenska Spel has over the online casino industry.
By scraping the current system and replacing it with a more liberal licensing system, international operators would have to apply and meet certain requirements. Only once appropriate requirements laid out by the local government is met would new operators be accepted into Sweden.
Another interesting change that has been proposed is the suggested tax on gross revenue of 18% in total.
This tax may sound like a steep addition to the new laws, but in comparison to the United Kingdom's gambling tax of 15% and Denmark's tax rate of 20%, this proposal is fairly market friendly and reasonable.
New Casino Regulatory Framework
As the possible changes to the current framework are set to come into effect, many players have shared that they're excited for the changes.
There is a large chance that the changes will become official on the 1st of January 2019, giving the current operators in the country a fair number of months before they become illegal.
Current operators that are extremely popular in the unregulated market include the Unibet brand. Operated by the Kindred Group, Unibet has shared their excitement for the new regulations and completely support the possible changes.
While Sweden is currently unregulated, the government has encouraged safe gambling practices and recognises gambling addiction as an issue that must be addressed.
It's important to choose an online casino that not only provides a safe experience but allows you to control your experience too.
The ability to set limits on deposits, losses, and how often you play can be a massive help, so finding an online casino that sees to your needs is not to be ignored. As with any form of entertainment, addiction is a possiblity, which is something that all punters should take note of.
Keep your eyes peeled for more information on regulation changes and which online casinos could be top choices when playing in Sweden.
For now, take a look at operators such as Casumo Casino, Guts Casino, LeoVegas Casino, and Thrills!
