Nora Al DaherIn the gambling world, one song rings true … “You gotta know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em”. Kenny Rogers must have really been on to something there, but apparently those words never took hold of Nora Al-Daher, the wife of an Omani Politician.

Mrs. Nora Al-Daher squandered more than £2 Million in just a few hours at the famous London Ritz Hotel. Not only did she squander all of that in just a few hours, she did it playing only one game … Punto Banco, a game similar in style to Baccarat.

After losing £2 Million, Mrs. Nora Al-Daher claimed that the hotel’s club was at fault, that is wasn’t her fault that she lost all of that money and that the staff should have stopped her from playing (giving her money away). She claims that the staff was fully aware of her gambling addiction and still cheered her on, encouraging her to keep playing, even going as far as giving her extended cheque cashing abilities to exceed her normal limits.

Someone Needs To Stop Me!

Mrs. Nora Al-Daher told the courts that she “needed someone that night to tell me to stop” and to “bring me to my senses”. Later she claims that she would have stop is someone had intervened.

During the proceedings, it was determined that Mrs. Nora Al-Daher had also lost “significantly” at other casinos that night before arriving at the London Ritz Hotel. During the testimony, her barrister informed the courts that the staff did encourage her to continue playing, telling her that “she would win next time” and that “she would get her money back”.

Through the discovery phase of the case, the judge found out that Mrs. Nora Al-Daher, the wife of Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Al-Busaida, has known about her addiction since 1999, and that the London Ritz Hotel has received more than £20 Million in buy-ins from her. Through it all, she has lost approximately £7 Million at the Ritz.

High Courts

The case eventually made it to the High Court, once the London Ritz Hotel sued Mrs. Nora Al-Daher for £1 Million, after some of her checks bounced. The casino also maintains that they did not coerce Mrs. Al-Daher into placing any bets and that she did so of her own volition.

The case is still pending closure.
