William Hill in-play bets app in AustraliaThe current 2001 Interactive Gambling Act in Australia states that all in-play bets have to be done either over the phone or in person at betting shops. Despite this law, there has been a shift in the online gambling world in Australia, in what some are calling a revolution, as the gambling industry is forcing government to review this Act.

UK gambling operator, William Hill, has created an app that allows gamblers the opportunity to place in-play bets in a way that doesn’t comply with Australia’s current laws. Using this application, punters are able to easily place wagers from their mobile device while playing at their favourite casinos.

According to The Australian, a local publication, a “grassroots lobbying campaign” has been started by members of the racing industry, pubs, clubs and major industry players. These local business people are pushing Australian parliament members to reconsider the current laws and keep in-play wagering as it is in the country. The members of this unofficial campaign fear that they will suffer losses if the law is changed.

Big players in the online casino world such as William Hill and Sportsbet are hiring law firms and creating coalitions of their own. These companies are hoping to swing the Australian casino laws in their favour, but they have come up against a lot of opposition.

The Australian Open tennis tournament was recently met with much of its own controversy. The Daily Telegraph quoted the Assistant Minister of Social Services, Alan Tudge, saying, “I believe legal in-play wagering would exacerbate the match-fixing controversies that have stained the reputation of the recent Australian Open tennis tournament.”
