William Hill BookieThe royal family is always being scrutinized but never has much as when there's a brand new royal baby on the way. From the moment the announcement was made that Kate was once again expecting, bets were started.

Would the latest addition be a boy or a girl? Would Kate and Will keep the sex of the baby a secret? What would be the due date of the new royal? At what time exactly would the baby be born? So many questions were asked and bets were made!

Of course, the biggest question was what the new addition would be named. When it was announced that the new royal baby would be a little girl, there were many options on the table. While it's extremely difficult to place bets on a name, bookies made sure that some good money would be earned.

As we all know, now that they the princess has been named, all of Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana's names were sure fire winners. Although for a long time, the front runner of the name bet was Alice. As time wore on, William Hill quickly slashed the odds on the royal baby being named Alice.

Take a look at the odds of the most popular names in the running:

  • Charlotte at 5/4
  • Alice at 11/8
  • Elizabeth at 9/2
  • Victoria at 7/1
  • Alexandra at 9/1
  • Diana at 10/1

The reasons for certain names being chosen are mainly for historical reasons as the names were linked to other royals. The names eventually chosen, Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, are all in honour of family members tied to William and Kate.

Charlotte is the feminine version of Charles, the Princess's grandfather, the Prince of Wales. It is also the middle name of Kate's sister, Pippa. Elizabeth was chosen as a tribute to the Queen as well as being Kate's middle name. And lastly Diana was obviously chosen to honour William's late mother, Princess Diana.
