Australian gamblingGambling in and of itself can be a fun pastime where you spend some cash and hopefully land a few big wins that will definitely make your day. The problem that many have with gambling as a whole is when losing becomes the norm and punters insist on chasing potential wins.

The practice of digging a deeper and deeper hole when one is already in debt is where the need for responsible gambling is a must. It’s a simple task, practicing responsible gambling. It’s as simple as setting yourself a budget and sticking to it.

While the gambling industry is an ever-growing one, with millions of people around the world taking part every day, there are those who have been singled out as the most prolific.

Australia’s gambling habits

It’s no surprise that Australians are some of the most prolific gamblers on the planet. Australia’s inhabitants are said to gamble more per capita than that of any of country in the world.

The Australian Gambling Research Centre (AGRC) has done a lot of research into this situation. Dr. Anna Thomas explained the gambling issues in Australia with the following statement.

“There was a period through the 1990s when there was a great increase in gambling. That then tailed off in the 2000s as the community came to realize the risks involved. But that doesn’t account for people who are still gambling and gambling at very high levels, particularly on pokie machines. There also hasn’t been a drop in problem-gambling issues. There’s a group of people in the population who are experiencing substantial harm.”

“The increased popularity of online sports betting and casino games is sighted as one of the factors contributing to the growing trend, but most critics and analysts say that it is the massive availability of slot machines at land-based venues that have had the greatest effect on the population.”

The numbers

During the third quarter of 2015, it said that gambling Australians spent a total of AU$6.5 billion. That record high shows an increase of 6.1% since Q3 of 2014. The total estimates would suggest that more than A $1000 per citizen is being spent on gambling activities, nearly double that of the average American.

A concerted effort by the Australian government is being made to spread the concept of responsible gambling and the positive outcomes as a result.
